Event overview
The Black Hills Veterans March and Marathon is an annual event in the Black Hills of South Dakota that honors the sacrifices of veterans. The event returns proceeds to local veterans organizations. It was conceived in 2002 and includes in-person and virtual participation options. A virtual category covers 26.2 miles; registrants who submit their miles receive a T-shirt and coin but no trophies.

Course and route details: the long routes use the George S. Mickelson Trail and traverse the Black Hills National Forest. The 110-mile march runs from Edgemont to Deadwood. The 26.2-mile march begins at the Rochford trailhead and ends at the Days of ’76 Rodeo Grounds in Deadwood. The 16-mile event starts at the Dumont Trailhead and finishes at the Days of ’76 Rodeo Grounds. The Mickelson Trail surface is crushed limestone and gravel; the trail passes through pine forests, crosses converted railroad bridges, and goes through four rock tunnels. Rest stops are provided approximately every 3-5 miles on the full march and marathon. The event includes individual, team, civilian, military, relay, and endurance categories.
