About the race
The Mount to Coast Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, hosted by AdventureCORPS, is an invitational 135-mile (217 km) nonstop foot race held in Lone Pine and Death Valley, California, in July 2027. Competitors race from Badwater Basin up to Whitney Portal under a 45 hour time limit.
The route begins at Badwater Basin, about 280 feet (85 m) below sea level, and finishes at Whitney Portal at roughly 8,300 feet (2,530 m). The course crosses three mountain ranges and includes about 14,600 feet (4,450 m) of cumulative ascent and 6,100 feet (1,859 m) of cumulative descent. The route passes landmarks such as Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Salt Creek, Devil’s Cornfield, Devil’s Golf Course, Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs, Darwin, Keeler, Lone Pine, and the Alabama Hills.
Entry is by invitation for an international field of roughly 100 athletes. Applications are accepted January 2–20, 2027, and applicants must meet published qualifying standards before applying. Typical requirements include prior long ultra finishes or specified recent race results; certain races and performance types are listed as acceptable qualifying events.
Race operations run under special use permits from federal and state agencies. Each competitor must be supported by a designated Crew Chief, a single support vehicle, and two to four crew members; specific safety, visibility, and paperwork requirements apply at check-in. Finishers who complete the course within 45 hours receive official finisher items including a t-shirt and a belt buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
