About the race

The Death Valley Trail event offers a marathon and a half marathon on the single dirt road that runs through Titus Canyon in Death Valley National Park, Inyo County, California. The race starts and finishes at the west end of Titus Canyon where it meets Scotty's Castle Road. The half marathon is an out-and-back that goes into the canyon to an aid station at about mile 6.5 and returns to the finish. The marathon continues past that aid station with multiple turnarounds at roughly miles 8, 13, and 18 before returning to the finish.

Course details: the route follows one dirt road and requires no additional course markings. Aid stations for the marathon are located at approximately miles 3, 6.5, 9.5, 12, 15.5, and 18; half marathon aid stations are at about miles 3, 6.5, and 10. Aid stations provide water, lemonade, sports bars, and a variety of snacks; energy gels are not provided. Portable toilets are placed at start/finish and at several points along the course.

Logistics: the field is limited to 200 participants under National Park Service rules. The event enforces a six-hour course cut-off (13:45 min/mile pace for marathoners, 27:30 min/mile pace for half marathoners). Headphones and earbuds are not allowed.
