WUNC 50th Anniversary 5K
WUNC presents a 5K run/walk on October 3, 2026, held on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham, North Carolina. The route is an out and back that starts from the American Tobacco Historic District and follows the American Tobacco Trail corridor.
The event takes place in the American Tobacco Historic District, located at 324 Blackwell Street, Durham, NC 27701. Free parking is available at the North and South Decks of the American Tobacco Historic District.
Registration includes a race bib and a commemorative T-shirt for everyone who registers by September 24. Registration opens July 17 and closes October 3; the registration fee is $50.00. Registration proceeds support WUNC's public service journalism and local programming.
The 5K is part of WUNC's 50th Anniversary activities and links to a free anniversary celebration at the American Tobacco Campus. The celebration features conversations and meet-and-greets with program and podcast hosts, a mini museum, live DJs, and family activities. WUNC became 100 percent community-supported after federal funding for public media was eliminated last year; the event is presented in that context of community support and public service.
