Event Format
The Winona Forest Backyard Ultra is a timed loop race. Each loop is 4.167 miles. A new loop starts every hour. Runners must complete each loop within the hour and be in the starting corral to begin the next one. If a runner fails to start a loop on the hour or does not finish within the hour, they are eliminated. The event continues until only one runner remains.
Location and Venue
The race headquarters is at the CCC Camp in the Winona State Forest near Mannsville, New York. The venue is near Interstate 81. The start/finish area, aid station, portable toilets, and parking are all located here. Runners can set up a personal area with tents and chairs. Electrical outlets are not available.
Aid and Support
A fully stocked aid station is located at the start/finish line. It provides fluids like water and Tailwind, soda, sweets, salty snacks, sandwiches, fruit, and cooked foods like quesadillas and pizza at different times. Crew members have access to the evening cooked foods. Runners are encouraged to bring their own supplies for specific dietary needs. A timing tent is on site.
Participant Guidelines
Runners are allowed a crew, but pacers are not permitted. No artificial aids, such as trekking poles, are allowed. Crew members cannot provide aid on the course. Once a runner completes a loop within the hour, they may rest, eat, or use the bathroom before the next loop starts. All personal gear must be removed by non-participants after a runner is eliminated.
