Philadelphia App Run Event
The Wings for Life World Run Philadelphia takes place at FDR Park and utilizes a unique format where participants race without a traditional finish line. This event is an App Run, meaning participants use a mobile application to track their progress while navigating the course. The Philadelphia location is open to both runners and wheelchair participants, offering an accessible environment for diverse athletes.
The course follows a loop through FDR Park, with the starting point located at the Boathouse. This arrangement allows participants to run or roll together in a central urban green space. Instead of a fixed distance, the race ends for each person once they are overtaken by a Virtual Catcher Car. This digital vehicle begins moving 30 minutes after the initial start at a speed of 14 km/h, steadily increasing its pace until all participants have been caught.
The event serves a charitable purpose, as the organizer directs 100% of all entry fees and donations toward spinal cord research projects. Participants are required to download the dedicated mobile app to participate in the race and receive their timing and race number. A refreshment station is provided on-site to assist those completing the loop. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
