Windy Hill Fell Race takes place on 8 February 2026. The venue is the Rams Head Inn, Ripponden Road, Denshaw, Oldham OL3 5UN. Entries open 18 July 2025 and close 5 February 2026. Entry is limited to 300 participants; entries on the day are possible for £20 if the limit has not been reached. Current entry fees are £15 for runners affiliated to FRA / LDWA / TRA and £17 for non affiliated runners. Minimum age is 17 years. The event is run under UKA rules and is licensed with the Trail Running Association and the Fell Runners Association. Chip timing will be used with results provided by Time My Race.
Route, safety and facilities
The route starts and finishes at the Rams Head and follows trails toward Piethorne Reservoir, Hollingworth Lake, a climb to Blackstone Edge, a moorland traverse along the Pennine Way to the Windy Hill mast, then returns via Ogden Valley and Piethorne to the finish. The course distance is 12 miles with about 2,100 feet of ascent. As this is a winter race, full FRA kit is required, including waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves, a paper map and traditional compass, whistle, emergency food, and a water bottle (minimum 500 ml); spare clothing for the day is also required. Checkpoints will carry basic supplies of water and sweets. An A3 map is available for purchase (£3.50) and a GPX file and larger map are provided by the organiser. Hot soup is provided free to runners at the pub after the race and a special runners meal is offered at a discounted price. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
