Windy Hill Fell Race : key details
Windy Hill Fell Race is scheduled for Sunday 8 February 2026 and is organised by CraggRunner. The venue is the Rams Head Inn in Denshaw, Oldham (Ripponden Road, OL3 5UN). The event is run under UKA rules and is licensed with the Trail Running Association and the Fell Runners Association. Chip timing will be used and results are available online. Distance is 12 miles with over 2,000 feet of ascent. The entry limit is 300. Entry fees listed are £15 (affiliated) and £17 (non affiliated); entries on the day are £20 if the limit has not been reached. Minimum age is 17 years.
Route, checkpoints and kit requirements
The route starts and finishes at the Rams Head and follows trails to Piethorne Reservoir, toward Hollingworth Lake, then up to Blackstone Edge and along the Pennine Way to the Windy Hill mast before returning via Ogden Valley. There are designated checkpoints (CP1 at Rakewood, CP2 at Lydgate, CP3 near the Windy Hill mast). Each checkpoint will have basic supplies of water and sweets. Because this is a winter race, competitors must carry full FRA kit, including waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves, a traditional paper map and compass, whistle, emergency food, and a water bottle (minimum 500 ml).
