Wild Wild Wilderness - Kickapoo State Recreation Area
Wild Wild Wilderness takes place on September 12, 2026 at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Oakwood, Illinois. The event offers two marked trail races that use park trails and wooded sections around Clear Pond.
The event distances:
- 3.45 Mile course that follows the Clear (Pond) Trail.
- 7.45 Mile course that is about 95% trail.
The 3.45 mile course is described as a rustic trail that wraps around Clear Pond, passes through a feature called Spooky Hollow, and includes a climb up a set of steps. The 7.45 mile course heads east out of the park into the woods, includes steep climbs and descents, creek and bridge crossings, and possible wildlife sightings such as deer. Aid stations are located at about 2 miles and just after 4 miles and will provide liquid hydration.
Registration opens November 7, 2025 and closes August 8, 2026. Race day registration and packet pickup are available onsite; packets include bibs, shirts, and pins and are distributed at the park maintenance building.
Event regulations include no bandits, no radios or headphones, no strollers, no dogs, no refunds or bib transfers, and no mailing of awards or shirts. Campground facilities at Kickapoo include 184 sites with about half offering electrical hookups, two shower buildings, and a sanitary dump station.
