Whilamut Butterfly Count
Part of the 36th Annual Eugene Butterfly Count, this event takes place on July 4, 2026 at Alton Baker Park, 622 Day Island Road, Eugene, OR. The Whilamut Natural Area is included in the count, which covers several natural areas within a five mile radius of Eugene-Springfield.
The count is coordinated by Nearby Nature together with the Lane County Butterfly Club. The club conducts butterfly counts on a single day each year around the Fourth of July and offers the chance to learn from an expert associated with Nearby Nature.
Participants meet at the Discovery Lab next to the yurt in Alton Baker Park. Walks cover approximately 2-5 miles. Attendees are asked to register so organizers can contact them if the start is delayed due to cold or damp weather. Online registration is listed as free; a separate $3 fee is collected by the Lane County Butterfly Club and financial assistance is available if that fee presents a barrier. Recommended items include water, lunch, and sunscreen. The event lists an age range of 16 to 106. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
