Whernside Fell Race
The Whernside Fell Race is an off-road running event organized by Settle Harriers, taking place in the Yorkshire Dales. The race covers a distance of 10.5 km (6.5 miles) and features an ascent of 468 m (1535 ft). The course is categorized as a BM-grade fell race and returns after a ten-year hiatus with a revised route to the top of Yorkshire.
The course begins with a fast section under the Ribblehead Viaduct before transitioning to a steep and direct climb up the old hikers' route to the summit of Whernside. From the peak, participants turn right and follow the main Three Peaks walking route back down to the Dales Highway. The final stretch consists of a sprint past the Blea Moor signal box, finishing at The Station Inn. Participants are required to follow specific tracks between the viaduct and the fell to avoid private land, keeping the wall on their right after the first stile.
The event is held under FRA rules, requiring participants to carry mandatory minimum kit. This equipment includes waterproof whole-body cover with taped seams and an integrated hood, a hat, gloves, a map of the route, a compass, a whistle, and emergency food. Kit checks may be performed on the day.
Registration and number collection take place in the car park behind The Station Inn at Ribblehead. Facilites include two portable toilets located near the registration area. Participants must be at least 18 years old to enter. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
