WGPAL Donut Dash 5K
The event is a 3.1-mile 5K event held in Downtown Winter Garden with a course that passes through local neighborhoods and along Lake Apopka. There are both an in-person 5K and a virtual 5K option; virtual participants are not required to eat donuts while completing their distance.
A distinctive feature is three designated "donut zones" located at the 1-mile, 2-mile, and 3-mile marks. Every donut finished inside a donut zone deducts 30 seconds from a participant's final time. Anyone who eats 12 or more donuts receives an additional bonus of 1 minute deducted per donut over 12. All donuts must be finished in the donut zones to count.
The event supports the Winter Garden Police Athletic League, which provides a free eight-week summer camp for 70 underprivileged and at-risk children and operates a Holiday Gifts for Kids Program that serves about 400 local children in need.
Per-entrant benefits include a race medal for all registered participants. Medals are also awarded to first and second place finishers (male and female) in each age category, and to the top three overall male and female finishers. The kid's fun run takes place after the main 5K; each adult entry includes one free child's entry and additional children may participate at no extra cost.
