Westmore Mountain Challenge
The Westmore Mountain Challenge is a one day route across five peaks in Westmore, Vermont: Moose, Hor, Pisgah, Haystack, and Bald. The longest option follows trails and roads for about 26 miles with a cumulative elevation gain near 6142 feet. The route uses morning shuttle drop offs to the trailhead and proceeds on marked trails and sections of road.
Key support points are a water and aid station on the CCC Road overlook to Lake Willoughby, a staffed rest and lunch station at the base of Bald Mountain’s Long Pond Trail with water, food, and a restroom, and a final water refill and check at the Mad Brook station. A food truck and post-hike celebration are held at the NorthWoods campus.
Route details include short trail approaches, summit segments, and road connections between mountains. Individual mountain segments list estimated miles and elevation gain, and the full route flags intersections with signs at key points. The organizer limits participant numbers under a state permit to reduce erosion on steep trail terrain. Registration typically opens in May. Camping on NorthWoods campus is available for a fee. The event provides shuttles on full-size school buses; ride time from campus to trailhead is about 45 minutes.
Safety notes state variable autumn weather, intermittent cell service, and the recommendation to carry layers and lighting if attempting the full distance. Dogs are not allowed on shuttles.
