Western North Carolina Flyathlon
The Western North Carolina Flyathlon is a multi-sport event held at Green River Ranch in the Green River Game Lands near Saluda, NC. The event blends trail running, fly fishing and craft beer to raise funds for watershed and fishery recovery following recent storm damage.
Organized by Running Rivers, funds raised are directed toward habitat improvement and reclamation projects that benefit native fish species in the local watershed. The organization collaborates with federal and state agencies and nonprofit conservation partners and emphasizes inclusive, community-focused outdoor recreation.
Pre-event activities include a Thursday evening gathering at New Belgium Brewing Co. in Asheville to review rules and share beers. Camping is available near the start area on the Friday and Saturday nights of the race weekend. A Friday night program of leisure sports games offers prizes that can include time deductions for the main event.
On race day participants assemble at Green River Ranch at the trailhead for the Green River Cove trail. The run is a 6 mile out and back course with approximately 1900 feet of elevation gain and loss. Fishing covers two distinct river sections: stocked fish that take a range of flies and wild trout that prefer more natural presentations such as stonefly, BWO and caddis imitations.
After the event, participants return to Green River Ranch for local craft beer, a meal and awards for top finishers and fundraisers. Event rules require catch and release using approved methods and promote proper trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
