Westcountry Ultra Hilly 50 miler
Westcountry Ultra Hilly 50 is a 50 miles trail race held on Saturday 8th May 2027 around Minehead, Somerset. The route records about 7337 ft of ascent and combines coastal paths, ancient woodland, marshes, moorland and small villages including Culbone and Horner. The start and finish are at West Somerset College in Minehead.
The course is partly out-and-back with an additional one-way loop. Notable features include the South West Coast Path between Minehead and Culbone Church, North Hill and the steep descent and later ascent at Bossington Hill, Porlock marshes, Webber’s Post and the approach over Dunkery Beacon. There are six aid stations; this is a cupless race so runners must carry bottles and a cup if they want drinks from aid stations. Approximate aid station distances from the start are: Bossington ~8 miles, Porlock Weir ~11 miles, Webber’s Post ~22 and ~28 miles, Porlock Weir ~39 miles and Bossington ~42 miles.
Course marking is used where needed and the organiser provides a GPX file with race information. Cut off time for the event is 16 hours. Professional medical cover is provided. Pacers are not permitted but companions for reassurance at night are allowed. Support crews may meet runners and hand up supplies; drop bags may be left at registration. Suggested kit includes a tested waterproof jacket, headtorch with spare batteries, high visibility clothing, a whistle, compass, mobile phone, at least one 500ml water bottle, emergency food and a foil survival blanket.
