Westcountry Ultra Hilly 50 miler
The Westcountry Ultra Hilly 50 miles takes place on Saturday 8 May 2027 around Minehead and the surrounding Somerset coast and moorland. The route contains substantial climbing, listed as about 7,337 ft of elevation, and combines partly out-and-back sections with an additional one-way loop. The start and finish are at West Somerset College, Bircham Road, Minehead.
The course passes coastal and inland terrain including ancient woodland, Porlock marshes and Weir, the tiny parish church at Culbone, picture postcard villages, Webber's Post and the route over Dunkery Beacon. Marking varies by section: there is good signage on the South West Coast Path and tapes and arrows on other parts, while the Dunkery Beacon and some wooded lines rely on route familiarity and the GPX file provided with race information. There are six aid stations; this is a cupless race so runners must carry bottles or cups. Aid stations supply water, coke, squash, sandwiches, crisps, fruit, nuts, sweets and other snacks.
The race has a 16 hour cut off. Professional medical cover is provided and race information includes medical arrangements. Pacers are not permitted; support crews and spectators are allowed with guidance on parking and meeting points. Drop bags can be left at registration. Entrants must be 18 or over. Suggested kit includes a waterproof jacket, base layer, hat and gloves, headtorch with spare batteries, high visibility clothing, whistle, compass, charged mobile and at least one 500 ml water bottle.
