Event overview

This is a British Orienteering Regional Ranking Event at West Woods near Marlborough. Access is by permission of Forestry England and a £2 charge will be collected from each driver on arrival. Assembly is in the public parking area. Entry is online only and closes at 23:59 on 08-01-2026. Standard entry fees apply until 23:59 on 04-01-2026; late entries attract a £2 supplement. There will be no entry on the day. Competitors may withdraw up to 23:59 on 04-01-2026 and fees will be held as credit for a future NWO event.

  • Brown 9.0 km 220 m climb : suitable for experienced orienteers only
  • Blue 6.9 km 155 m climb : suitable for experienced orienteers only
  • Green 5.2 km 125 m climb : suitable for experienced orienteers only
  • Short Green 3.8 km 100 m climb : suitable for experienced orienteers only
  • Light Green 3.4 km 95 m climb : suitable for orienteers with some experience
  • Orange 3.1 km 75 m climb : suitable for all orienteers
  • Yellow 2.2 km 55 m climb : suitable for beginners
  • White 1.8 km 45 m climb : suitable for beginners

Group entries are available for Orange, Yellow or White for a single fee; groups receive two maps. Novice courses for seniors are White, Yellow and Orange.

Facilities, terrain and safety

The map is 1:10,000 scale, 5 m contours, A3, printed on waterproof paper. The timing system is SportIdent; controls will be SIAC enabled where compatible and hire dibbers will be non-SIAC (SI-Card 8). There will be two starts about 900 m from Assembly and one finish about 150 m from Download. Facilities at Assembly include toilets and a first aid tent; there will be no caterer on site. Terrain is mainly mature woodland with areas of undergrowth, often bramble; courses avoid the worst areas. Full leg cover must be worn and carrying a whistle is compulsory. Bio-security guidance and advice on ticks and Lyme disease are given. From January 2026, non-members of British Orienteering will not be covered by British Orienteering public liability insurance and will pay a supplement.
