Events
The West Penn Trail Triathlon offers three event types: the Solo Adventure Race, the 2 Person Relay, and the 3 Person Relay.
Course Details
The triathlon course uses the Conemaugh River and the West Penn Trail in the historic town of Saltsburg, Pennsylvania.
The first leg is a paddle segment. If river conditions allow, participants launch kayaks or canoes from the Conemaugh Dam and paddle 7 miles downstream to Saltsburg. This route has mostly flat water with occasional small ripples. If water levels are unsafe, a multi-loop course based in Saltsburg will be used instead. All participants must wear a personal flotation device (PFD).
The second leg is a bike segment. It is a 14-mile out-and-back ride to the Conemaugh Dam. The first 3.5 miles are on a crushed-stone rail-trail. The next 3.5 miles feature short steep climbs, gravel stretches, rolling terrain, and a brief paved section. The route then returns the same way. E-bikes are not permitted. Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists.
The third leg is a run segment. It is a 5K course along the Kiskiminetas River on the Kiski Section of the West Penn Trail. Runners cross the Jack Maguire Bridge to a turnaround point before returning to the finish.
Participant Information
Solo racers must be at least 15 years old. Participants aged 12 to 14 may compete only as part of a team and cannot complete the paddle segment alone. Headphones or earbuds are not allowed during the cycling leg.
Registration
Early registration opens on April 1, 2026 and closes at 1:00 p.m. on October 8, 2026. The final paddle course will be confirmed closer to race day based on river conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
