Event overview

The Warbird 100 is a mountain ultra held in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Leslie and Clay counties, Kentucky. The out-and-back/loop course begins and ends at Leslie County RV Park near Hyden and is listed at about 103 miles. The race is organized as a single large loop that uses much of the Redbird Crest Trail and a mix of double track, singletrack, gravel roads, and short paved sections. Maximum finishing time is 35 hours.

Course and terrain

The route features long ridge runs, multiple sustained climbs and steep descents, creek crossings, technical singletrack sections, and exposed views. The course highest point is listed at 2,062 feet. Notable named features include the Saw Dust Pile climb, Peabody climb, Bowens Creek and Bear Creek sections, and a final return along the John Asher’s connector and strip-mine road.

Aid stations, crew and pacers

Aid stations are positioned throughout the course with several crew-accessible locations (examples: Bear Creek TH, Peabody TH, Sugar Creek TH). Drop bags are available at multiple aid stations (for example Saw Dust Pile, Bowens Creek, Oakley Cave, Bear Creek, Peabody, Sugar Creek, Rattlesnake). Pacers may join runners at designated aid stations (including Bowens Creek, Bear Creek TH, Peabody TH, Sugar Creek TH); one pacer at a time, age 18+ and subject to race rules. Course marking uses reflective pink hanging and ground flags at junctions; orange Redbird Crest Trail diamonds appear but the race diverts from the RCT periodically.

Logistics and mandatory gear

Crew should expect spotty cell coverage (AT&T generally best; some areas have no coverage). Drop bags must be turned in by the night before the race, limited in size, and labeled. Mandatory runner gear includes the ability to carry at least 1 L of water, an emergency space blanket, and a headlamp (recommended to be in a drop bag at Bowens Creek for night sections). Additional recommended items are listed for cold, wet, and remote conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
