Mountain Running in Wandiligong
Wandi Cross is a mountain running event held in the valley of Wandiligong, situated near Bright, Victoria. The course traverses steep, natural, and technical terrain, including the high points of both Mystic Mountain and Goldmine Ridge. Participants encounter a variety of surfaces such as single trail, rocky escarpments, and fern-lined spurs. This event is organized as a technology-free run to emphasize the connection between the runner and the mountain environment, though official timing is provided by the organizers.
The event offers several distance options to accommodate different experience levels:
- WC Xtreme: 26.3 km with 2437 m of elevation gain/loss.
- WC Traverse: 11.9 km with 1072 m of elevation gain/loss.
- WC Summit: 4.6 km with 460 m of elevation gain/loss.
- Kids Run: 2 km with 81 m of elevation gain/loss.
The WC Xtreme and WC Traverse courses involve significant vertical gain, including the "Goat Track," which features sections requiring hands-on scrambling and rope assistance. The WC Summit is also available for younger participants seeking a mountain climb. Dedicated aid stations are positioned along the routes, and mandatory gear for the longer distances includes a wind jacket, technical running footwear, and a hydration flask. All profits from the event are donated to the Wandiligong Primary School. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
