Walter Raleigh Round Half and Third Marathon

The Walter Raleigh Round takes place on 3 January 2026 in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. The event is organised by Climb South West Ltd and is based at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club. The route visits the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and nearby countryside.

Courses and route

  • 13.6 miles - half marathon
  • 8.5 miles - third marathon

The half marathon route uses quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, little known footpaths, the Otter valley, High Peak, the Jurassic Coast and a dismantled railway. The third marathon follows the same route to the River Otter but avoids High Peak and the coastal section, using a riverbank path to rejoin at the second river crossing.

Event services and entries

The course is fully marked and marshalled in key locations. There are well stocked aid stations - two on the half marathon and one on the third marathon - and first aid cover. All finishers receive a Walter Raleigh Round solid oak coaster. The event notes mud and many hills, is open to runners and walkers, and has a 5 hour maximum time. Event base facilities include car parking, hot showers, a bar and a cafe. Entries open 29 April 2025 and close 1 January 2026. Entry fees are £38.50 for the half marathon and £27.50 for the third marathon. 16th century fancy dress is optional. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
