Walter Raleigh Round Half and Third Marathon
The event is a countryside trail race that starts and finishes in the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. The course travels through quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, little known footpaths, the Otter valley, High Peak, the Jurassic Coast and a dismantled railway, offering varied terrain and natural scenery.
There are two route options with the same early section along the river Otter. The longer route follows the full coastal and high ridge sections, while the shorter route avoids the biggest hill and coastal section, using a riverbank path to rejoin the main route at the second river crossing.
Support and logistics include a fully marked course, marshalls in key locations, well stocked aid stations (one on the shorter route; two on the longer route), and first aid cover. All finishers receive a solid oak coaster. The course is known to include mud and several hills. The event is open to runners and walkers, and 16th century fancy dress is optional. The race route also visits the birthplace of the event's namesake, passing through local countryside linked to that historical connection.
