Walter Raleigh Round Half/Third Marathon
The Walter Raleigh Round is a multi-terrain running event based in the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. The course travels through the countryside associated with the childhood of Sir Walter Raleigh, passing his birthplace. The event takes place at the Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club, which serves as the event base providing car parking, hot showers, a bar, and a cafe.
Participants can choose between two distances:
- Half Marathon (13.6 miles)
- Third Marathon (8.5 miles)
The Half Marathon route consists of quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, and footpaths. It traverses the Otter valley, High Peak, the Jurassic Coast, and a dismantled railway. The Third Marathon follows the same initial course but deviates at the river Otter to avoid the High Peak hill and the coastal section, instead following the riverbank path to rejoin the main route at the second river crossing.
The event is open to both runners and walkers with a maximum time limit of 5 hours. The course is fully marked and supported by marshals at key locations and a well-stocked aid station. All finishers receive a solid oak coaster. While not mandatory, participants are encouraged to wear 16th-century fancy dress. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
