Event details

The Walter Raleigh Round Half and Third Marathon is organised by Climb South West and takes place on Saturday 3 January 2026. The event starts and finishes in the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. There are two course options: a half marathon and a shorter third marathon.

Entries open 29 April 2025 and close 1 January 2026. Entry fees are £38.50 for the half marathon and £27.50 for the third marathon. The event is open to runners and walkers and has a 5 hour maximum time.

Course and facilities

The route passes the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and uses quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, little known footpaths, the Otter valley, High Peak, the Jurassic Coast and a dismantled railway. The third marathon follows the same route as the half until the river Otter, then avoids the biggest hill and coastal section by following a riverbank path to rejoin at the second river crossing.

Distances:

  • 13.6 miles (half marathon)
  • 8.5 miles (third marathon)

Facilities include a fully marked course, marshalls at key locations, first aid cover and well stocked aid stations (two on the half marathon, one on the third marathon). All finishers receive a Walter Raleigh Round solid oak coaster. The course includes mud and hills. 16th century fancy dress is optional. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
