Walter Raleigh Round
The Walter Raleigh Round is a trail running event based in the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. The routes visit the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and traverse the countryside where he spent his childhood. Participants can choose between two distinct distances:
- Half Marathon (21.9 km / 13.6 miles)
- Third Marathon (13.7 km / 8.5 miles)
The Half Marathon course follows a mix of quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, and footpaths. It passes through the Otter valley and includes sections along the High Peak, the Jurassic Coast, and a dismantled railway. The route features significant hills and mud.
The Third Marathon follows the same initial path as the longer race until it reaches the river Otter. From there, it stays on the riverbank path, moving downstream to rejoin the main route at the second river crossing. This shorter option avoids the coastal section and the ascent of High Peak.
The event is open to both runners and walkers, with a maximum time limit of five hours allowed for completion. The courses are fully marked and supported by marshals at key locations. An aid station is provided on the route. The event headquarters at the Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club offers parking, hot showers, and a cafe. All finishers receive a solid oak coaster.
