Walter Raleigh Round Half/Third Marathon
The Walter Raleigh Round is a trail event on 9 January 2027 based at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club. The route visits the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and the surrounding countryside where he spent time as a child.
The course runs over quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads and little known footpaths. It passes through the Otter valley, over High Peak, along the Jurassic Coast and uses a dismantled railway for part of the route.
Available distances:
- Half Marathon: 13.6 miles
- Third Marathon: 8.5 miles
The Third Marathon follows the same course as the half as far as the River Otter but avoids the biggest hill and the coastal section, instead following the riverbank downstream to rejoin at the second river crossing.
Event provisions include a fully marked course, marshalls in key locations, a well stocked aid station and first aid cover. Finishers receive a Walter Raleigh Round solid oak coaster. The event notes mud and plenty of hills, a five hour maximum time open to runners and walkers, and facilities at the event base including car parking, hot showers, a bar and a cafe. Sixteenth century fancy dress is optional and encouraged. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
