Walter Raleigh Round Half/Third Marathon
The Walter Raleigh Round is a pair of trail races based at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club in the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. The longer route visits the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and countryside associated with his childhood. The course passes quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, little known footpaths, the Otter valley, High Peak, the Jurassic Coast and a dismantled railway. The half marathon distance is 13.6 miles.
The shorter route follows the same course as far as the River Otter but avoids the biggest hill and the coastal section. It uses a riverbank path downstream to rejoin the half marathon at the second river crossing; this third marathon distance is 8.5 miles.
Event services include a fully marked course, marshalls at key locations, a well stocked aid station and first aid cover. Finishers receive a Walter Raleigh Round solid oak coaster. There is car parking, hot showers, a bar and a cafe at the event base. The event notes mud and hills on the routes, allows walkers as well as runners under a five hour maximum time, and mentions optional 16th century fancy dress.
Entries are open from 27 February 2026 and close on 7 January 2027. Entry fees are listed as £38.50 for the half marathon and £27.50 for the third marathon. The event is organised by Climb South West Ltd. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
