Walkabout Outfitter Wild Gear Chase
The Walkabout Outfitter Wild Gear Chase is an adventure race held within a two-mile radius of GO Fest in Roanoke, Virginia. Using a map and a corresponding cue sheet, participants have two hours to reach as many checkpoints as they can. Checkpoints are located in both urban and wilderness settings. Racers plan routes and race to collect points; final ranking uses points and time.
After the timed portion, competitors are lined up for gear tent entry. A person enters the gear tent every 15 seconds and may stay inside as long as they wish, but may only leave the tent with one piece of gear. Prizes vary from small items such as water bottles and hats to larger items including kayaks, fly rods, and coolers. The event awards at least one piece of gear to every participant.
There are separate men's and women's divisions. Entry requires a registration fee of $45 and registration opens on 17 August 2026 and closes on 16 October 2026. Racers receive maps and clue sheets before the start and are given ten minutes to plan their route. A penalty applies for late return, assessed as five points for each minute missed.
