VentureQuest Adventure Race

The VentureQuest Adventure Race is a multi-discipline event held at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, Maryland. Participants can choose between two course formats: an 8-hour race and a 24-hour race. The event requires athletes to navigate a course using trekking, mountain biking, and paddling. The exact order and distance of each segment are kept secret until the day of the race, requiring competitors to make route choices and strategic decisions during the event.

Available distances and estimated requirements include:

  • 8-hour race: approximately 32 miles total, including 4 miles paddling, 8 miles biking, and 10 miles trekking.
  • 24-hour race: approximately 100 miles total across all disciplines.

The event is open to soloists and teams of two to four members. Team categories include male, female, and mixed gender, as well as masters divisions for participants aged 50 and over. Athletes must remain within 100 feet of their teammates throughout the competition.

Registration includes the use of provided canoes or kayaks, life jackets, and paddles, though participants may use their own paddles and PFDs if they transport them. Mandatory gear includes a mountain bike, a helmet, a basic repair kit, and a non-GPS watch or a Garmin in adventure race mode. The race utilizes manual navigation with maps and passports provided at check-in. The event also provides medical support, post-race food, and a finisher medal.
