Independence Run 5K
The Independence Run 5K takes place on July 5, 2026 in Frostburg, Maryland, on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail. The event starts at the Depot at the bottom of the switchbacks and uses the GAP trail heading west and returning to the start.

Both events follow an out and back course that goes west half the distance and then returns to the Depot. The outbound portion has a gradual incline and the return includes a decline to the finish. Pre-race registration fees are $25 for adults and $20 for youth; same day registration is listed at $30.
Parking near the trailhead and the Thrasher Carriage Museum is limited; priority parking is reserved for volunteers, people with disabilities, and families with young children. Other available parking areas include the lot behind St. Michael’s, two public parking lots by City Place, and Main Street. A shuttle runs between those parking areas and the trailhead, and the Depot is available for drop-off access.
An after party and awards ceremony will be held at City Place with music, refreshments, giveaways, and awards. Awards include overall male and female 5K, male and female masters, and top three finishers per age and gender group. Age groups include 10 and under; 11-15; 16-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and over. Ribbons will be given to children 10 and under and to mile participants.
Proceeds support Frostburg State University’s Children’s Literature Center. Organizers offer a free 5K training program leading up to the event and accept volunteers and sponsors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
