Kennebec Mountain Run : event overview

The Kennebec Mountain Run takes place on August 1, 2026, at La Plata City Campground in Hesperus, Colorado. It is a trail race of 15 miles through the La Plata Mountains. The course includes 3,100 feet of elevation gain and reaches about 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. The event was established in 2001 and operates as a nonprofit with proceeds benefiting La Plata County Search & Rescue. Registration is capped at 150 runners. The organizer’s refund policy states no refunds, deferrals, or transfers except that, should the entire event be cancelled, entrants may defer to the following year or request a partial refund.

Course, aid and logistics

The course direction alternates by year; 2026 is a counterclockwise year. There is a single aid station at The Fork that participants pass twice (mile 4.2 and mile 10.4); it provides water and Tailwind. Runners must carry their own hydration system and any additional fuel. The event runs under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County. Parking at La Plata Campground is limited, so carpooling is requested; there is no race day entry. Medical response may be affected by rugged terrain, and participants are responsible for evacuation if needed. Post-race awards include pies for the top three overall male and female finishers and a raffle for running shoes; food and beverages are provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
