Valkyrie Relay - Durango
The Valkyrie Relay in Durango, Colorado is a one-day multisport relay that combines seven back-to-back disciplines into a single timed race. The course runs across the San Juan Mountains and along the Animas River. Teams may divide the seven sports among members, or a single athlete can complete all seven legs as an Ultra Heptathlete. The event lists a maximum team size of nine and offers two course formats.
The seven disciplines raced consecutively are trail running, mountain biking, road cycling, stand-up paddleboard, open-water swimming, river paddle, and a final road run. The registered support crew role is called Wingmate; it is not a competitive leg but a crew position that moves athletes, bikes, boards, and boats during the event.
Valkyrie Relay began in 2021 and has held five editions since then, including a move to Durango in 2023. The event preserves official finishing times and podiums in a results archive and Hall of Fame. Organizers note there will be no event in 2026 while they plan future editions. The Durango edition is listed provisionally for September 18, 2027 and registration details will be published when confirmed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
