Uwharrie 5 Hour Adventure Race (Boat & Hike)
The event takes place at Morrow Mountain State Park in Albemarle, North Carolina, and uses the picnic shelter in the upper parking area as the start and finish location. Participants navigate with pre-plotted CalTopo maps to locate checkpoints placed on natural features such as hilltops, stream intersections, coves, or trail junctions.
Disciplines combine hiking and paddling. Distances for these sections are:
- Hiking: 5-7 miles
- Paddle: 3-6 miles
Racers may enter solo or as part of a team of two to four. Teams must complete tasks together and remain no more than 100 feet apart unless the race director specifies otherwise. The race format emphasizes collecting a series of checkpoints while moving between paddling and trekking sections. Typical race pace for an adventure racer is noted around 4-5 miles per hour.
A registration fee of $90 is listed per racer; team entries are priced per racer. All participants must sign a Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement. Minors are required to race with an adult. After the race, food and drinks will be provided and winners will be announced with prizes awarded.
