Urban Wilderness 50k
The Urban Wilderness 50k is a trail running event held in Knoxville, Tennessee. It features a course that utilizes the city trail system, starting and finishing at the Urban Wilderness Gateway Park. The route forms a 31-mile loop that traverses four city parks, one Wildlife Management Area, and several sections of private land, including Ijams, the Drop Inn, and the Helix trails.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- 50 km: A 31-mile loop with approximately 3,400 to 4,000 feet of elevation gain.
- 10 km: A 6.3-mile course with approximately 640 feet of elevation gain.
The 50 km course includes a variety of terrain such as greenways, forested paths, and short road sections. Runners encounter rolling climbs and descents in areas like Burnett Ridge and Ross Marble, followed by smoother sections near Mead's Quarry and the Will Skelton Greenway. The route also includes more concentrated climbing sections in Hastie, covering trails such as Remedy and Shadow Run. Five aid stations are located along the route, with specific stations designated for crew access and drop bags.
The 10 km course follows the initial path of the longer race, heading up Red Bud trail to View Park before descending through Victor Ashe and the Drop Inn campground. It concludes with a stretch on the Sycamore trail and the greenway. One aid station is available for participants in this distance. The trails for both races are maintained and described as runnable.
