Event Overview

The United Way "Be a Hero" is an annual event taking place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in downtown Durant. It consists of a 5K and a 1 Mile Fun Run.

Beneficiary

The event benefits the Bryan County United Way and its agencies. The Red River Special Olympics is a main partner, added in 2020. A donation from the race proceeds is presented to Special Olympics.

Course and Format

The race starts on Evergreen Street in front of Opera House Coffee. The 5K begins first, followed by the 1-mile fun run. There is a water stop for the 5K route within the loop at Southeastern. The event is chip-timed by First Place Timing.

Awards and Recognition

Awards are given for the Overall Male and Female 5K winners, the top three male and female finishers in each age division, and The Suman Cup (Sponsors' Challenge). The Ciara's Cup, or Special Olympian - Heart of a Champion Award, is presented at a separate Special Olympics event.

Registration and Logistics

Participants can pick up their race packets at Opera House Coffee on the Friday before the race and on race day morning. The event is a Choctaw PACE program event; members should register through that program. Dressing as a favorite superhero is encouraged.
