Overview

The UK Wife Carrying Race is an annual novelty running event held in Dorking, Surrey. The race was first run in 2008 and has roots in a Scandinavian sport. The next scheduled race date is 08/03/2026. Race headquarters is at The Priory School, West Bank, Dorking, RH4 3DG.

Race format and rules

The course is an out-and-back up The Nower and back down, a distance of about 380 m with a steady 15 m ascent. Entrants start at the same time and the first over the line is the winner. The person being carried must be human, alive and at least 18 years old. There is a weigh-in: all carried competitors must weigh at least 50 kg; under-weight participants must wear a rucksack filled to the required weight. All carried competitors must wear a helmet. Both males and females may carry a 'wife' and the carrier may use recognised holds such as bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder-ride, fireman’s carry, the Estonian Hold or the Dorking Hold. Obstacles and water hazards are included; a return-leg "Splash Zone" is part of the course.

Prizes, entry and other details

Entry fees are non-refundable but places may be transferred to another team. Prizes include a barrel of local ale and medals for the overall winners, and a £250 contribution towards expenses for the first British finishers who represent Britain in the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland, subject to providing a write-up and photos. Entries receive a personalised race number, a mini love spoon, two bottles of local beer and novelty prizes for categories such as best fancy dress, heaviest finishers and last-placed finishers. The organisers use a local school as HQ, work with local suppliers, encourage car sharing and public transport, and donate profits to Mid Surrey Community Fridges.

Access and parking

Competitors are encouraged to travel by bike or public transport if possible. If arriving by car, follow car park signs and marshal directions and avoid parking in surrounding residential streets. Walking times from stations are about 30 minutes from Dorking Main and Dorking Deepdene, and about 20 minutes from Dorking West. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
