Event Details
The Tug Hill Extreme Adventure Race is held in Boonville, New York. It offers two race formats: a 24-hour adventure race and an 8-hour adventure race.
The 24-hour race is a United States Adventure Racing Association (USARA) Regional Qualifier and an Adventure Racing World Series North America points race. It involves mountain biking on roads and trails, flat-water paddling, and off-trail navigation. Participants navigate using a provided set of topographic maps and a compass to find pre-plotted checkpoints. The winning team is the one that finds the most checkpoints within the 24-hour limit.
The 8-hour race involves biking and trekking, with paddling to be determined. It is described as suitable for newer adventure racers while still challenging experienced participants.
Teams can range from 1 to 4 people. Racers can choose between bringing their own non-motorized boat or using a race-provided boat, which will likely be a combination of 2–4 person canoes and kayaks. A USARA membership is required for all participants; a single-day membership can be purchased during registration.
Post-Race and Location
The post-race awards and festivities are held at Hidden Meadows Campground in Boonville. A post-race meal and one craft beer or non-alcoholic beverage per racer are included. Camping is available at Hidden Meadows Campground, and hotel options like The Lodge at Headwaters are nearby.
Required Gear
Participants must carry mandatory individual and team gear throughout the race. Team gear includes a map case, compass, cell phone for emergencies, bug spray, a water filter, a first aid kit, and a labeled paddle bag. Individual mandatory gear includes a whistle, an emergency blanket, a means to carry liquid, a waterproof jacket, a netted bug hat, and sufficient food. Specific gear is also required for mountain biking sections. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
