Trail Running + Pollinator Science in Missoula
Montana Trail Crew and The Xerces Society are cohosting a combined trail run and field training on Mount Dean Stone in Missoula on May 30, 2026. The event brings together trail running with community science focused on native bumble bees and the Montana Bumble Bee Atlas.
Participants will run the House of Sky trail and complete a Bumble Bee Atlas field training at Mitten Mountain, a route of about 4 miles round trip. The outing will start and end at the Skyline Trailhead on Mount Dean Stone, with carpools coordinated from Pattee Canyon.
The training provides demonstration and practice in safely catching, photographing, and releasing bumble bees and includes equipment for surveying. Attendees can learn how to collect observations that contribute to the Montana Bumble Bee Atlas and later complete surveys from June 1 through August 31. Participants are asked to bring a running vest to carry a small butterfly net and personal water and snacks; vials and nets are provided by The Xerces Society. Anyone may attend; no prior experience is required. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
