The Yomp Mountain Challenge

The Yomp Mountain Challenge is a volunteer run, three day mountain event held in June in and around Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. The event was first run in 1983 and raises funds for local charities; to date well over £110,000 has been donated. In 2025, £10,000 was shared among several local causes.

A range of routes is offered across the weekend, allowing participants to choose a distance that fits their plans:

Basecamp is at The Engine Shed, Pennine View Park, Kirkby Stephen. The event village includes food vendors, a beer tent, family activities, live music and support from sponsors. Camping and campervans are welcome on site and nearby hostel and B and B options are within walking distance.

An additional activity for the event is the Podgill Plunge abseil, a 25 metre descent from Podgill Viaduct. Participants for the abseil must be 18 or older and physically able to take part. All proceeds from Yomp activities are donated to local charities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
