The Green Man Ultra

The Green Man Ultra is a looped ultramarathon that follows the Community Forest Path around the city of Bristol. The event is offered in two formats and runs on varied terrain through distributed woodland and countryside surrounding Bristol. It is organised under race conditions, uses chip timing and has checkpoints that provide water and some food.

• 45 miles / 72 km: full loop, 3100 ft elevation, four checkpoints.
• 30 miles / 48 km: partial loop from Keynsham, 1900 ft elevation, two checkpoints.

The winter and summer events use the same route but run in opposite directions and present different underfoot conditions. The course is self-navigated with downloadable written directions and GPX files; pacers called timelords run to target times of 9, 10, 11 and 12 hours to help with navigation and pacing. Checkpoint cut-offs are enforced and failure to meet them or to follow the set route can result in removal from the event.

All entrants must register online, be aged 20 or over, and carry mandatory kit for safety. Finishers receive a bespoke T-shirt, a medal and a signed certificate; completion of the 45 mile course within the 12 hour cut-off confers the Woodwose or Woodwight designation. Runners who complete both the winter and summer 45 mile events in the same year are awarded a GMU buckle based on cumulative time. Avon Wildlife Trust is the nominated race charity.
