The Two Breweries Hill Race
The Two Breweries Hill Race is an annual hill running event in the Scottish Borders between Traquair House and the Broughton Ales brewery. The course is listed as 30 km / 18 miles with about 1500 m / 4900 ft of ascent and predominantly follows hill tracks, open heather and short sections of country road.
The race is organised each year on the fourth Saturday in September and has been held since 1983, with a few exceptions. Entrants must be at least 18 years old. Runners are required to carry full emergency kit including wind and waterproof full body cover, a map of the entire route, an orienteering-type compass, a whistle and food equivalent to a chocolate bar; there is a strict kit check before the race.
There are eight marshalled checkpoints along the route. Water is available at Glenrath Farm and Stobo Home Farm and these locations also act as retiral points. Hill rescue cover is provided by a local mountain rescue team. A custom waterproof Harveys map of the route is available at race registration for a fee.
Finishers receive a bottle of local ale, IPA or lager and prize giving takes place at Broughton Village Hall where hot soup and cake are offered. Entries are by online pre-entry via ProTay and entries typically open around Easter. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
