Event

The MTC Thames Challenge takes place 6-9 August 2026 around the Thames Path. It is a four-day multiday ultra covering a total of 184 miles from the source of the Thames in the Cotswolds to the river mouth area. The event carries 6 UTMB points. Entry options include solo and relay categories; published entry fees are Solo £595 and Relay Member £425, with a defer option available for a fee.

Stages and format

The Challenge is split into four daily stages, each run as a separate ultra:

  • 57 miles Day 1: Cotswold Ultra (source to Travelodge Oxford)
  • 49 miles Day 2: Oxford Ultra (Oxford to Henley-on-Thames)
  • 47 miles Day 3: Windsor Ultra (Henley-on-Thames to Travelodge Kingston)
  • 33 miles Day 4: Richmond Ultra (concluding at Thames Gate)

Accommodation and evening meals are included for the ends of Days 1 to 3. Rooms are shared, typically three per room; a private room is available at extra cost subject to availability. Competitors receive a bespoke medal and a shirt, mug, or hat for each day finished; the four medals join to show the route to scale.

Competitors must be self-sufficient, carry mandatory kit (backpack, head torch with spare batteries, OS Map 150 or downloadable maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food, basic first aid kit) and may use the organiser’s support vehicle to transfer one cabin-sized kit bag. A minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour is required; falling below this may result in removal from the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
