Event overview
The MTC Thames Challenge takes place 6-9 August 2026 and is organised by Ultra Running Ltd. It is a four-day endurance race along the Thames Path, described as covering 184 miles from the source of the Thames in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich. Race format, logistics and rules
The challenge is split into four stages. Distances for each stage are given as:
- Day 1: 57 miles
- Day 2: 49 miles
- Day 3: 47 miles
- Day 4: 33 miles
Accommodation and evening meals are included for the ends of Days 1-3 (shared rooms, three per room by default). Ultra Running Ltd will pay for the main evening meal; starters, drinks and desserts are not included. A support vehicle transfers one cabin-sized kit bag per competitor; competitors remain responsible for their belongings in transit.
Competitors must be self-sufficient and carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, Ordnance Survey map (or downloadable maps), compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food and a basic first-aid kit. Entrants must be at least 20 years old on the start day. The organisers require an average of 4.0 miles per hour; competitors below this threshold will be withdrawn from the race.
