The Salmon Run Ultra and Relay
The Salmon Run is a multi-distance event that follows the migration path of the Atlantic salmon from the sea to their spawning grounds. The route primarily utilizes the Exe Valley Way, leading runners from the coast at Exmouth to the finish at the Green in Dulverton. This event is a collaboration between Tidelines and Wild Running to highlight the environmental challenges faced by the endangered Exe Atlantic river salmon.
Participants can choose from two main formats:
- 43 mile Ultra: A full point-to-point course with 1050 meters of ascent and a 12-hour cut-off.
- 2 to 12 mile Relay: A non-competitive team event for up to 8 people.
The relay involves teams carrying a symbolic salmon baton between changeover points located in various towns and villages along the river. The first section of the relay includes a collaboration with the Exmouth Parkrun along the shoreline. For the ultra-marathon distance, participants are advised to carry torches.
The event features community involvement and cultural elements along the course, including intermittent music from an accordionist, a family orchestra, and various ceremonies at the start and finish locations. All participants receive a medal upon completion. For logistical support, pre-booked transport options are available to shuttle ultra runners from the finish in Dulverton back toward the start area. The course is supported by GPX and JPEG maps for navigation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
