The Devil's Gorge
The Devil's Gorge is an ultramarathon event held at Gorges State Park in Sapphire, North Carolina. Organized by Dirty Wolf Ultras, the event takes place on a technical trail system characterized by rock gardens, exposed roots, and steep grades. The course is designed to test endurance through relentless climbs and demanding descents within a mountain environment.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 50 km (one full loop of approximately 31 miles)
- 25 km
The route is a 30-mile trail circuit. In the event of rain, the course is subject to change and may be modified into a 15-mile out-and-back format. The course is marked with red ribbons and red arrows. Trekking poles are permitted and recommended for all participants. There is a total time limit of 10 hours to complete the race.
Aid stations are provided along the course, stocked with water, Tailwind, sodas, and various food items such as pickles, pretzels, fruit, and bacon. First aid supplies are also available at these stations. All finishers receive a medal upon completion of their distance. The event serves as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting research into brain deterioration and learning disabilities.
