The Ozark's Mountain Challenge
The Ozark's Mountain Challenge is a timed hiking challenge held in Patterson, Missouri, using trails in Sam A. Baker State Park. Participants attempt up to eight ascents of Mudlick Mountain within a twelve hour limit. Eight ascents equal approximately 7,980 feet of total elevation gain and a total hiking distance near 23 miles. A single ascent is nearly 950 feet of elevation change and about 2.8 miles.
The route follows the Mudlick Hike Only Trail to the Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail and then the spur to the Fire Tower Trail. Trails are described as rugged, with inclines reaching about 28 percent in places. After each successful ascent, hikers are transported back to the trailhead by shuttle. Organizers report average shuttle wait times under seven minutes.
The event is noncompetitive; pacing and completion goals are individual and volunteer staff provide encouragement and aid. Registration fees cover on-site meals, beverages including alcohol, aid station hydration and nutrition, recovery services, event apparel or swag, and entry to the optional Spark of Strength ceremony. The Spark of Strength ceremony is held the evening before at the CCC Lodge, is optional and free, and includes a symbolic fire pit ritual; attendees will not hike to the summit as a group during that ceremony. The minimum age to participate is 16. No refunds are offered and ticket transfers are restricted after March 15, 2027. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
