Ozark's Mountain Challenge - Hiking (Ascent only)
The event on May 1, 2027 in Patterson, MO is an ascent only hiking challenge at Sam A. Baker State Park focused on repeated climbs of Mudlick Mountain. Participants have up to twelve hours to complete as many ascents as they can, with the full challenge consisting of eight ascents that total approximately 7,980 ft of elevation and about 23 miles of hiking. Each single ascent is roughly 950 ft of elevation change and about 2.8 miles. After each ascent hikers are shuttled back to the trailhead.
The route follows the Mudlick Hike Only Trail to the Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail and the spur to Fire Tower Trail. All Trails rates the trail as hard for its rugged terrain and steep sections that approach 28 percent incline at times. The event is not a race; completion milestones are noted and participants who do not finish all eight ascents are still recognized for each ascent completed. For 2027 the organizers will recognize the male and female participants with the most ascents as Alpha Lizard and Apex Lizard.
Registration includes on-site meals, beverages including alcohol at the event and after-party, aid station hydration and nutrition, recovery aids, and event swag. Registration closes March 26, 2027. The minimum age to participate is 16 and minors must be registered with an adult. Pets are not allowed on the trail. No refunds are offered but optional SPOT Refund Insurance is available at registration. An optional Spark of Strength ceremony is held the Friday before the event at the CCC Lodge to symbolically release personal challenges; attendance is free and does not require pre-registration.
