The Ozark's Mountain Challenge
The Ozark's Mountain Challenge is an ascent-only hiking event held at Sam A. Baker State Park near Patterson, Missouri. The format asks each participant to ascend Mudlick Mountain eight times within a twelve hour period, producing a total elevation gain of approximately 7,980' and a total hiking distance of about 21 miles. After each successful ascent, hikers are transported back to the trailhead by shuttle.
The 2026 route follows the Mudlick Hike Only Trail to the Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail, then the spur to Fire Tower Trail. The route is rated "hard" on All Trails and includes rugged terrain and steep sections that approach 28 percent incline in places. The event is organized as a personal challenge rather than a timed race; milestones are recognized for each ascent and any completed ascents are celebrated.
Registration fees cover on-site meals and beverages including alcohol, aid station hydration and nutrition, recovery tent services, event swag, and access to the optional Spark of Strength ceremony. The Spark of Strength ceremony takes place the evening before the hike at the CCC Lodge, is optional and free, and includes a symbolic ritual using a branding iron and a fire pit; cold drinks will be provided and no pre-registration is required. Additional event details note a minimum participant age of 16, no pets allowed on the trail, spectators allowed near the start area, and a no refunds policy. Net proceeds support the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce 501c3 and regional tourism efforts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
