The Ozark's Mountain Challenge - Hiking (Ascent only)
The event is an ascent-only hiking challenge held in Patterson, Missouri, at Sam A. Baker State Park. Participants attempt eight climbs of Mudlick Mountain within a 12-hour time limit; the cumulative ascent equals 7,980 feet and the total distance is approximately 23 miles. After each successful ascent, hikers are transported back to the trailhead by shuttle.
The route follows the Mudlick Hike Only Trail, Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail, and the spur to Fire Tower Trail. AllTrails rates this trail as hard due to rugged terrain and inclines that reach about 28% in places. The challenge is organized as a non-competitive test of endurance and mental stamina; volunteers and other participants provide encouragement along the way. Participants who complete fewer than eight ascents are recognized for their achievement.
An optional Spark of Strength ceremony is held on the Friday before the event at the CCC Lodge; it is free, does not require preregistration, and includes a symbolic burning of written challenges. Registration includes food, beverages, aid station hydration and nutrition, event swag, recovery aids, and access to the after-party. The minimum age to participate is 16 years; minors must register with an adult. Pets are not allowed on the trail, and spectators may gather near the starting area.
