Event Information
The Ozark's Mountain Challenge takes place in Patterson, Missouri at Sam A. Baker State Park. Participants have twelve hours to complete a hiking challenge.
The Challenge
The goal is to achieve a total vertical ascent of 7,980 feet, which is the height of Mount Olympus. This is accomplished by hiking up Mudlick Mountain multiple times. Each individual ascent involves an elevation gain of nearly 950 feet over a distance of 2.6 miles. The total hiking distance for the full challenge is approximately 21 miles.
For 2026, the hiking route uses the Mudlick Hike Only Trail, connecting to the Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail, and then to the Fire Tower Trail spur. This trail is rated as "hard" due to its rugged terrain and steep inclines. After each ascent to the summit, a shuttle service transports hikers back to the trailhead at the base.
Additional Details
The event is not a race. Participants can attempt any number of ascents, and achievements at various milestones are celebrated. The minimum age to participate is 16, and any minor must be registered with an adult.
Registration includes meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), beverages, aid station hydration and nutrition, recovery aids, event swag, and admission to an after-party. An optional "Spark of Strength Ceremony" is held the evening before at the CCC Lodge. This ceremony, which includes cold drinks, allows participants to symbolically release personal challenges. Pets are not allowed on the trail, but spectators are permitted near the starting area.
Funds raised support the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit, with proceeds going toward event expenses and regional tourism efforts for the Ozark Foothills. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
