The overGRound Marathon and Relay
The overGRound is a free, unsanctioned running event held within the city limits of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This grassroots marathon and relay celebrate the local community and fitness culture through a no-frills approach to organized sport. The event is co-hosted by various local running and fitness clubs, focusing on inclusivity and support for all participants regardless of pace.
The course begins and ends at Veterans Memorial Park at 101 Fulton Street E. The route is designed to showcase diverse features of the city, including various neighborhoods, cityscapes, and parks. Participants will pass several coffee shops along the way. Because the course remains open to public traffic, the event is primarily self-supported. However, organized aid stations, wayfinding guidance, and mobile volunteers on bicycles are positioned along the route to assist runners.
Available participation options include:
- Marathon (26.2 Miles)
- Relay Marathon (26.2 Miles)
The relay marathon allows for flexible team configurations. Teams can consist of any number of runners, and the distances of each leg are determined by the teammates themselves. Common transition points for relay teams include the coffee shops located along the course. Participants are encouraged to provide their own bibs for the race. Every runner is greeted upon their return to Veterans Memorial Park regardless of their finishing time. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
