The overGRound Marathon and Relay : Grand Rapids, MI
The overGRound is a free, unsanctioned marathon and marathon relay held in Grand Rapids that highlights a variety of neighborhoods, cityscapes, parks, and local businesses. The route begins and ends at Veterans Memorial Park and is intended to pass many coffee shops and other neighborhood landmarks beyond the commonly noted trails.
The event is mostly self-supported on a course that is not closed to traffic. Organizers provide wayfinding guidance, several aid stations, and volunteer and bicycle support teams who check in with runners along the route. Registration for entries and relay teams is free.
Relay teams may be composed of any number of runners and may divide the 26.2 mile route in any sequence teammates choose; suggested change points include local coffee shops but teams set their own plan. The event is co-hosted by local running and fitness clubs and emphasizes community participation, including volunteer roles the day before and the day of the event.
This edition is the third running of the overGRound and is described as the first known marathon held fully within Grand Rapids city limits. A participant guide for the 2026 edition is referenced as forthcoming. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
