The Northumbrian
The Northumbrian is an endurance sports event held within the Kielder Water and Forest Park in Northumberland National Park. The event features a variety of long-distance challenges, including triathlons, trail runs, and aquabike competitions. The 2026 edition marks the fifth year of the event, which utilizes the local landscape of lakes and forests. It also serves as the host for the British and English Middle Distance Triathlon Championships.
Participants can choose from several endurance disciplines:
- Full Iron-Distance Triathlon: A long-course triathlon for individuals and teams.
- Half Iron-Distance Triathlon: A middle-distance triathlon for individuals and teams.
- Aquabike: A half-distance event consisting of the swim and cycle legs.
- 50K Ultra Trail Run: A long-distance trail running race.
- 28K Trail Run: A shorter trail running option.
The triathlon swimming segments take place in the waters of Kielder Water, which are typically around 15.5 degrees Celsius. The cycling courses utilize hilly country roads with significant elevation changes. The running segments are primarily held on undulating forest trails and paths.
Support is provided throughout the course with aid stations positioned approximately every 20 km for the bike leg and every 2 km for the run. All participants in the triathlon and aquabike events are required to hold a British Triathlon race license or purchase a single-use race pass. The event maintains a minimum age requirement of 18 for triathlon and aquabike distances. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
