The Naturalist - Franklin, NC
The Naturalist Trail Race is a fall trail event in Franklin, North Carolina organized by Outdoor 76. The race follows sections of the historic Bartram Trail, beginning in downtown Franklin, passing Wallace Branch, and climbing toward Wayah Bald. Each participant in the 2026 event receives a custom pint glass.
Distances offered:
- 25K: roughly 5,500 feet of elevation gain, finishing near Wayah Bald summit.
- 50K: more than 8,500 feet of elevation gain, circumnavigates Wayah Bald and returns.
Aid stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, energy bars and other snacks. Runners tackling the ascent to Wayah Bald are advised to carry at least one liter of water. Aid and support appear at several points along the course including Wallace Branch, Harrison Gap, and the Wayah Bald summit, with additional stops on the 50K route.
Logistics note a field limit of 150 entrants and limited parking at Wayah Bald. A shuttle is available to return 25K runners to the start. The event enforces cutoffs at designated mile markers; missing these cutoffs may jeopardize completion and available services. Post-race activities include live music, food trucks, craft beer and awards. The event policy states no refunds or deferrals and participants sign a waiver acknowledging inherent risks and a release of liability.
