The Naturalist - Franklin, NC
The Naturalist Trail Race offers trail running options in Franklin, NC following the historic Bartram Trail from downtown Main Street toward Wayah Bald. The event is part of Outdoor 76’s Fall Celebration and awards a custom pint glass to all participants.
Distances offered:
- 25K: roughly 5,500 feet of elevation gain, finish atop Wayah Bald.
- 50K: exceed 8,500 feet of gain, circuit includes Wayah Bald and return.
The course leaves downtown Franklin and climbs via Wallace Branch toward the Wayah Bald area. Multiple aid stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, energy bars, and other snacks; runners are advised to carry at least 1 liter of water for the ascent. Key aid locations are at Mile 3.5 (Wallace Branch), Mile 9 (Harrison Gap), Mile 14.5 (Wayah Bald summit), Mile 19.5 (Harrison Gap return, 50K only), and Mile 25 (Wallace Branch return, 50K only).
Field size is capped at 150 entrants combined. Parking is limited at Wayah Bald; a free shuttle is available for 25K participants returning to the start. Time cutoffs are in place at Mile 9, Mile 14.5, and Mile 19.5 and may affect completion. Post-race activities include live music, craft beer, food trucks, and awards.
