The Naturalist : Franklin, NC
The Naturalist Trail Race is part of Outdoor 76’s Fall Celebration and follows sections of the historic Bartram Trail from downtown Franklin toward Wayah Bald. The course routes pass Wallace Branch and include sustained climbing to summit sections near Wayah Bald.
Distances offered:
- 25K, about 5,500 feet of elevation gain, finishing near Wayah Bald
- 50K, more than 8,500 feet of elevation gain, circling Wayah Bald and returning
Aid stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, energy bars and other snacks. Runners are advised to carry at least one liter of water for the Wayah Bald ascent. Aid locations are listed by mile: Mile 3.5 (Wallace Branch, limited aid), Mile 9 (Harrison Gap), Mile 14.5 (Wayah Bald summit), Mile 19.5 (Harrison Gap return, 50K only), and Mile 25 (Wallace Branch return, 50K only).
Logistics note a combined field limit of 150 entrants and limited parking at Wayah Bald. A shuttle service returns 25K runners to the start on race day. Time cutoffs are enforced at specific mile markers and continuing after being told to stop can forfeit aid station support and future eligibility.
Event policies include a required waiver that acknowledges the inherent risks of trail running. The organizer’s policy states there are no refunds or deferrals. Post race offerings include live music, craft beer, food trucks and awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
