The Mt. Baldy 5000
The Mt. Baldy 5000 is a summer mountain 5k on the slopes of Mt. Baldy Resort. The course begins at the bottom of the ski lifts at about 6,400 feet elevation and gains roughly 1,500 feet in total. Runners start from the lifts parking area, follow a steep initial climb onto the Manker Trail, continue a steady climb for about 2.2 miles to the Notch, then proceed to the Mt. Baldy reservoir for roughly another quarter mile. After looping the reservoir, the route finishes with a downhill sprint of about a quarter mile.
Race operations include bib pickup near the starting area and an optional bag transport service from the start to the top; space in the vehicle is limited and large bags are not accepted. Participants who purchased the BBQ or an overnight campout receive a wristband to access their meals at the Notch.
The finish area at the Top of the Notch includes a BBQ, a bar, and live music. Every finisher receives a Mt. Baldy 5000 technical trucker hat. Runners can descend by lift by showing their race bib; lift rides take roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Friends and family may ride the lift to meet finishers, but tickets are available separately and may cost more on race day. There is little to no cell coverage near Mt. Baldy and no gas once inside the mountain roads. Lift riders must be at least 40 inches tall and dogs are not allowed on the lifts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
