The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100
The event comprises two linked ultra trail races across the Lake District fells. The route for the 100 mile race is a circular tour that encompasses the lakeland fells, follows almost entirely public bridleways and footpaths, and includes around 6300m of ascent. The 50 mile race covers the second half of the 100 mile course and includes about 3000m of ascent.
- 100 mile
- 50 mile
The 100 mile route passes through Dunnerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale, Buttermere and Keswick before continuing via Matterdale, Haweswater, Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater, finishing at Coniston. The 50 mile route starts from the northern end of Ullswater at Dalemain Estate and follows the eastern shore to Howtown, then via Haweswater, Mardale Head, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite to Coniston. The course avoids the popular Lakeland summits and instead moves through valleys and lesser‑visited fells.
Both events require navigation skills and experience of fell running or walking. The 100 mile race is continuous in nature with a 40 hour overall limit; the 50 mile race has a 24 hour limit. There are staffed checkpoints providing food and drink: 14 compulsory on the 100 and 6 on the 50. Terrain is rugged with significant climb, descent and sections of difficult navigation, and historical dropout rates are high. For the 50 mile race the organiser provides coach transfer to the start while competitors are based at Coniston for the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
