The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100

The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100 are two long-distance trail races based around Coniston in the Lake District, held over a weekend in July 2026. Both courses run largely on public bridleways and footpaths and traverse a wide range of Lakeland terrain.

Distances

  • 100 miles - circular route around Lakeland fells, about 6300 m ascent.
  • 50 miles - second half of the 100 course, about 3100 m ascent.

The 100 miles course makes a clockwise loop from Coniston and passes through Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale, Buttermere and Keswick, then on to Matterdale, Haweswater, Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater before returning to Coniston. The 50 miles course starts at the northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate, follows the eastern shoreline toward Howtown, visits Mardale Head, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite, and finishes at Coniston.

Both events include compulsory staffed checkpoints with food and drink provided: 14 checkpoints on the 100 course and 6 on the 50 course. The 100 is run continuously with a maximum allowed time of 40 hours, and the 50 has a 24 hour time limit. There is a high non-completion rate on the 100 mile course, and successful navigation and prior fell running or walking experience are required for competitors.
