The Maple Leaf March
The Maple Leaf March is a non-competitive, inclusive, not-for-profit international walking event held annually in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Its stated mission is to promote walking as a recreational and fitness activity; to foster international understanding and friendships; and to showcase the main monuments, memorials, green spaces, and parks of Canada’s National Capital Region.
The March is not a race; the aim is for participants to succeed in a supportive environment. It is held every year during the second weekend of October, allowing walkers to experience the Canadian autumn.
The event is an official event of the IML Walking Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports. Registration options include in-person and virtual participation with IVV stamps. Saturday and Sunday participation is mandatory to meet IML medal requirements. Mix-and-match short distances (5 km or 10 km) receive IVV stamps only and are not eligible for IML awards.
The 2026 headquarters is The Royal Canadian Legion Montgomery Branch #351, 330 Kent Street, Ottawa ON K2P 2A6. The venue hosts registration, opening and closing ceremonies, departures and finishes for the walks, and evening programs.
