The Maple Leaf March
The Maple Leaf March is an international, non-competitive, inclusive and not-for-profit walking event held each year in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Its stated mission is to promote walking as a recreational and fitness activity, to foster international understanding and friendships, and to showcase the main monuments, memorials, green spaces and parks of Canada’s National Capital Region.
The event is not a race; the stated goal is for participants to succeed within a supportive environment. It is held during the second weekend of October and is an official event of the IML Walking Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports.
The 2026 edition is headquartered at The Royal Canadian Legion, Montgomery Branch #351, 330 Kent Street, Ottawa ON K2P 2A6. That location will host registration, opening and closing ceremonies, the departure and end points for the Friday icebreaker walks and all Saturday and Sunday walks, and the Friday and Saturday evening programs.
Registration options include in-person and virtual formats. Certain in-person options specify that the Saturday and Sunday walks are mandatory to qualify for an IML medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
