The Jackalope Lope

The Jackalope Lope is a trail running event held in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area near Redding, California. The race features a variety of distances set within an environment known for significant elevation gains and technical trail sections. All proceeds from the event are dedicated to the maintenance of the local trail system by the Redding Trail Alliance.

Participants can choose from three distinct distances:

  • 8.5 miles / 9 miles
  • 20.5 miles
  • 52 km (32 miles)

The 9-mile course begins at the Brandy Creek "A" Parking lot and utilizes the Brandy Creek Trail, featuring steep single-track sections and a climb followed by a traverse on the Rich Gulch Trail. The return leg involves a technical descent back to the starting area. The 20.5-mile course includes sections along South Shore Road, the Mill Creek dirt road climb, and the Boulder Creek and Papoose trails. The 52 km course, described as an ultra trail run, reaches approximately 6,400 feet of elevation gain. This route takes runners over Panther Gap on Peltier Valley Road and up to the summit of Kanka Peak.

Participants are required to possess a valid National Park Pass to access the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The event provides aid stations along the courses and drop bag services for those in the longer distances. After the race, a festive atmosphere is provided with food and beverages for the participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
