The Iron Turtle - Last Runner Standing in Coker, AL
The Iron Turtle is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra scheduled for November 14, 2026 in Coker, Alabama. The event uses a simple format: runners complete a four mile loop every hour and each lap begins exactly on the hour. A rubber chicken announces the start of each lap.
Runners compete in separate male and female divisions; both a male and a female Last Runner Standing are declared. The event emphasizes personal records. After missing a cut-off, participants may continue unofficially to reach a mileage goal and that overall mileage will be recorded on Ultrasignup. Runners who achieve a PR receive an Iron Turtle sticker. Winners receive event swag and all finishers receive an award showing total mileage and a race shirt.
A shoot out option may be offered after 12 hours if all remaining runners agree; that final loop would determine the winner. Organizers are also considering a leap frog or tag team division in which teammates alternate laps.
The course is a well groomed four mile loop with about 270 feet of gain per lap, approximately 95% single track and 5% paved road. The start and finish are at the pavilion in front of the main bridge. A staffed aid station at the start/finish provides food, electrolytes, and lunch and dinner options. Lake Lurleen park amenities include camping, fishing, swimming, and hot showers. Race staff provide music and on-course support. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
