Event overview

The Hardwolds 40 is a 47-mile trail race held in the Yorkshire Wolds. The course has approximately 4600 ft / 1402 m of ascent. Competitors have a 20-hour time limit to complete the route. The race starts at Beverley Rugby Club and finishes at Malton Community Sports Centre. Relay teams may enter with between two and four runners.

Route and checkpoints

The route follows the Hudson Way from Beverley before joining the Wolds Way near Goodmanham. It passes through or near Londesborough, Millington, Fridaythorpe, Thixendale and the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, then leaves the Wolds Way near Settrington Beacon and follows the Centenary Way into Malton. Key checkpoints with water and food are located at Goodmanham, Millington (drop-bag point), Fridaythorpe, Thixendale (drop-bag point) and Settrington Beacon. Cutoffs are enforced at Millington, Thixendale and the finish.

Logistics, kit and rules

Runners must carry mandatory kit for the full race, including hat and gloves, waterproof jacket with taped seams, minimum 500 ml water, headtorch, whistle, emergency food, map and route description, survival bag/foil blanket and a mobile phone. Two non-returnable drop bags are permitted (Millington and Thixendale). One support runner is allowed for the final 7 miles; support crews are restricted to specific meeting points. A mandatory tracker is used and spotchecks of kit will be carried out; penalties or disqualification apply for missing kit, route shortcuts or rule breaches.
