Event overview
The Hardwolds 40 takes place on Saturday 27 June 2026 and covers 47 miles with total ascent of 4600 ft / 1402 m. Competitors have 20 hours to complete the course. Entry fees vary by date and affiliation, roughly in the range of £78 to £90 for solo entries; relay entry fee is £128 and includes a tracker and a £1 donation to the Wolds Way National Trail. Entries include an option to book a coach transfer from the finish to the start for an additional £25.
Route and logistics
The route follows the Hudson Way from Beverley, joins the Wolds Way near Goodmanham, and continues along the Wolds Way with a diversion into Millington. It passes through Fridaythorpe, Thixendale and the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, leaves the Wolds Way near Settrington Beacon, then follows the Centenary Way into Malton for the finish. Designated checkpoint locations include Goodmanham Dale, Millington (18 miles), Fridaythorpe, Thixendale (30 miles), Settrington Beacon (39.5 miles) and the finish in Malton. All checkpoints will be stocked with food and water; some indoor points may provide hot drinks or food.
Runners must carry mandatory kit for the full race, including hat, gloves, a waterproof jacket with taped seams, minimum 500 ml fluid, headtorch, whistle, emergency food, map and route description, survival bag/foil blanket and a mobile phone. Random kit spotchecks and specified time penalties apply for missing items. Two non-returnable drop bags are permitted at Millington and Thixendale. Support crews are allowed at two designated points; one support runner may join for the final seven miles. Relay teams may contain 2 to 4 runners.
