Event Overview

The Hardwolds 40 is an ultramarathon through the landscapes of East Yorkshire. The route covers a distance of 47 miles (approximately 75 km) with a total ascent of 4600 ft (1402 m). Participants have a time limit of 20 hours to complete the course. The event starts at Beverley Rugby Club and concludes at the Malton Community Sports Centre.

Course Details

The race follows the Hudson Way from Beverley toward Goodmanham, where it joins the Wolds Way. Runners travel through chalk landscapes, market towns, and ancient villages including Londesborough, Millington, and Thixendale. The path also passes the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy. Near Settrington Beacon, the route leaves the Wolds Way and descends into Settrington to follow the Centenary Way to the finish line in Malton.

Support and Logistics

Participants can choose to run with a support crew or remain unsupported. The organizers provide a drop bag system for specific dietary needs, with bags accessible at Millington (18 miles) and Thixendale (30 miles). Checkpoints throughout the course provide water, coke, and food; several indoor stations offer hot food and drinks. An optional coach service is available to transport runners from the finish in Malton to the start in Beverley before the race.

Participation Options

The event offers two main categories:

  • Solo: A single runner completing the full 47-mile course.
  • Relay Teams: Teams of 2 to 4 runners where members divide the distance.

Every finisher receives a race medal and a technical T-shirt. Mandatory safety equipment must be carried by all participants, including a waterproof jacket with taped seams, a headtorch, a survival bag, and a mobile phone. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
