The Great Root Trail Race

The Great Root Trail Race takes place at the Big Cedar Wilderness Trails on the grounds of Mountain Creek Church in Dallas, Texas. The course is situated on over 100 acres within an escarpment area that features cedar and hardwood forests. Participants traverse a rugged landscape characterized by dramatic elevation changes, dirt, rocks, and roots.

The event utilizes an 11.2-mile loop consisting of several trail segments, including Texas Sunset, SXSW, Dragonfly, Copper Head Ridge, Ranger, and Barbwire. From various points on the trails, runners can see landmarks of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, such as the stadium in Arlington and the Fort Worth skyline.

Available distances and categories include:

  • 11.2 Miles (Trail race or Ruck)
  • 22 Miles (Trail race)
  • 33 Miles (Trail race)
  • Virtual options for all distances

The Rucking division involves carrying a weighted pack, with award eligibility requiring 30 lbs for males and 20 lbs for females. This is a cupless event, so participants are expected to bring their own hydration bottles. Recommended equipment includes running poles and headlamps.

Proceeds from the event support a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that assists individuals experiencing grief, domestic violence, and PTSD. All registered participants receive a t-shirt and either a medal or a challenge coin, depending on their category. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
