The Great Kinder Barrel Race
The Great Kinder Barrel Race takes place in Edale on Saturday 4th September 2027. The event uses Newfold Farm Campsite as its base, directly across from the Nags Head Pub in the centre of Edale. A new route introduced in 2023 starts and finishes in Edale while retaining elements of the original course.
The race grew from a local tale about pumps running dry at the Nags Head Pub and a team running over Kinder to the Snake Pass Inn to return with a barrel of beer. For twenty years the Snake Pass Inn served as the start, with the race finishing in Edale.
Entries open 1st April 2027. The event includes several race formats:
- The Barrel: team race with teams of eight carrying a barrel.
- The Pint: individual fell race over the same course.
- The Half Pint: an easier children’s race.
- The Keg: a children’s team race.
Spectators are welcome; the field includes a bouncy castle, BBQ, cake stall and a bar. Parking is available and signed in the village, a short walk from Newfold Farm, and one parking space is reserved for each Barrel Race team to help move equipment. Entrants who show train tickets may receive free cake. All profits support Hope and Edale Primary Schools. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
