The Great Kinder Barrel Race
The Great Kinder Barrel Race is an annual fell event in Edale, Hope Valley. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Saturday 5 September 2026 and entries open 1 April 2026. The event base is Newfold Farm Campsite, located across from the Nags Head Pub in the centre of Edale.
There are three events that use the same moorland course or a shorter variant for children. The team event called The Barrel involves teams of eight carrying a barrel over the moors. The Pint is an individual fell race run over the same route. The Half Pint is an easier children’s race along a shorter course.
The race route was changed in 2023 so that it now starts and finishes in Edale while preserving the spirit of the original route that linked Edale and the Snake Pass Inn. The day is family friendly and includes a bouncy castle, a BBQ, a cake stall and a bar on the field. Parking is signed in the village and one parking space is reserved for each Barrel Race team to ease equipment transport. Organisers encourage travel by train and will give free cake to entrants who can show their train tickets. Proceeds support Hope and Edale primary schools.
