The GREAT Donut Challenge

The GREAT Donut Challenge is a charity 5K held in West Hartford to raise money for Hero to Hero, a Connecticut nonprofit that helps veterans transition to civilian life and continue using military training as first responders. The start and finish are at Fleet Feet Hartford.

Participants run or walk a 5K course through town and encounter three on-course donut stops. At each stop a card directs the participant to either "Eat", "Carry" or "Free". If "Eat" is drawn, the donut must be eaten before moving on. If "Carry" is drawn, the participant must carry the donut in hand until the finish and then eat any carried donuts before crossing the line; a one minute time penalty is applied for each whole donut that did not survive to the finish. If "Free" is drawn, no donut action is required at that stop.

Walkers are welcome. Children may participate only when running with a parent or guardian. The field is capped at 250 registrants. Early bird registration is priced at $30 and ends August 27; standard registration is $35 and remains open until the event or until the cap is reached.

Top three finishers in male and female categories receive prizes provided by HOKA. Roads will remain open during the course so participants must obey traffic laws and use crosswalks. Gluten free donuts are available upon request. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
