The Drop - Halifax
The Drop is a navigation challenge based at Dukes Bar, 16-18 Market St, Russel St, Halifax HX1 1NX. Participants hand over electronic devices at registration and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag. They are transported, blindfolded or with an alternative safety goggle, to an undisclosed drop-off and must find their way back to the event centre. Distances are measured as the crow flies, so the actual route taken may be longer.
Participants must complete the course without authorised navigational aids. Devices allowed for recording must remain sealed inside the provided emergency bag; breaking the seal results in disqualification. Only maps supplied by the organisers may be used, if any are provided. Shortcuts are not permitted and the event requires participants to return under their own power.
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional feature for an extra fee. Trackers are reported to be accurate within five metres but can be affected by buildings and signal black spots, and placement in an exterior pocket is recommended. All trackers must be returned at the end of the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply. Organisers retain access to additional safety features not available to participants.
Ticketed distances and pricing are listed for the event; prices range from £35 to £55. The Drop Ultra is a planned 25 mile edition with the same rules, and the actual route is likely to exceed 30 miles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
